NY Asbestos probe

News of an asbestos investigation at the former Agway building in DeWitt, New York, has left workers, neighborhood residents, and visitors worried about their health. Workers hired to clear the building of cancer-causing material face the biggest health risks but even those who walked, played, or just lived near the building also may see future consequences, as could workers' families and friends. Industrial talc, an open-pit- mined mineral used in ceramic, paint, and paper manufacturing contains lethal, cancer-causing asbestos fibers responsible for a pottery artisan's fatal mesothelioma, a jury ruled November 16, 2006 in the first-ever U.S. verdict connecting industrial talc with asbestos-related cancer. Work Stops at WTC site.

Asbestos Fears have Halted the work of Crews. At World Trade Center,officials feared for workers’ safety at risk of asbestos poisoning.

Air quality testing was carried out, the results came back as negative and crews were allowed to resume the search while wearing protective clothing.

The work was stopped because officials were worried about toxins in the air, including asbestos, which is a carcinogenic that can cause a number of health problems, including mesothelioma, which is asbestos related cancer.

Asbestos King Owens Corning Sheds Bankruptcy Status

Owens Corning emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, six years after it sought help because of rising costs from asbestos lawsuits. The building materials giant now has a plan to pay off asbestos-related lawsuits and resolve future asbestos liabilities.
