Advanced Medical Optics, the manufacturer of Moisture Plus Multi-Purpose Solution, says that Moisture Plus is a safe product and that the cases of Acanthamoeba keratitis that have been linked to the solution should instead be blamed on improper care and handling of contact lenses. James Mazzo, the president and chief executive of the company, says, "What we're trying to handle right now ... is what the CDC hit us with. It's not a manufacturing problem or a contamination issue." Mazzo noted that Acanthamoeba keratitis usually affects people who do not care for their contact lenses appropriately and do things like disinfecting the lenses with water or wearing them while swimming or showering.
