Medical Firm Rejects Blame for Eye Infections
Advanced Medical Optics is saying that their Complete Moisture Plus Multi-Purpose Solution should not be blamed for cases of Acanthamoeba keratitis that have led to a voluntary recall of the product. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say that people who use Complete Moisture Plus show an increased risk for Acanthamoeba keratitis, which is an eye infection that can lead to blindness of permanent vision loss. James Mazzo, the president and the chief executive of Advanced Medical Optics, says that "it's not a manufacturing or a contamination issue. AK is something that the vast majority of contact lens uses typically avoid by following their eye practitioner's advice."
The CDC recommends that people who have unused portions of the solution throw it away and also throw away any contact lens and contact lens cases that may have come into contact with the solution. Approximately 85 percent of Acanthamoeba keratitis cases occur in contact lens users, but the condition is very rare.
