AMO, FDA Encouraging Consumers to Dispose of Evidence?

If you have a container of Advanced Medical Optics' Complete Moisture Plus, should you throw it away? Both AMO and the Food and Drug Administration recommend that consumers discard any unused Complete Moisture Plus solution that they still have. However, this action may be of enormous benefit to AMO; consumers essentially are destroying any evidence that they may have had that the contact solution was contaminated.

Finally, she found an opthamologist who was able to diagnose her with Acanthamoeba keratitis. Harris had been using Advanced Medical Optics' Complete MoisturePlus solution for a long time.
Contaminated Contact Solution Worrisome to Consumers

Consumers are worried after discovering that Advanced Medical Optics' Complete Moisture Plus Contact Lens Solution has been linked to a potentially blinding eye infection. Attorney David Ennis says that people who have contacted him are confused, scared, upset and do not know what to do next. "We are dealing with all these emotions," said Ennis. "We are directing these folks back to their opthamologist to be checked and to the FDA website for additional information about the recall. Unfortunately, for some of these victims it is too late ad they have been left with blindness or severe vision loss."

AMO Recalls Moisture Plus

Advanced Medical Optics is recalling Complete Moisture Plus Multi-Purpose Solution after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that 138 people using the solution ended up getting acanthamoeba keratitis. Investigators believe that the solution is contaminated and that people aren't getting the infection simply from being exposed to the bacteria in daily life.

Medical Firm Rejects Blame for Eye Infections

Advanced Medical Optics is saying that their Complete Moisture Plus Multi-Purpose Solution should not be blamed for cases of Acanthamoeba keratitis that have led to a voluntary recall of the product. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say that people who use Complete Moisture Plus show an increased risk for Acanthamoeba keratitis, which is an eye infection that can lead to blindness of permanent vision loss. James Mazzo, the president and the chief executive of Advanced Medical Optics, says that "it's not a manufacturing or a contamination issue. AK is something that the vast majority of contact lens uses typically avoid by following their eye practitioner's advice."

Advanced Medical Optics, the manufacturer of Complete MoisturePlus, the recalled contact lens solution, says they are unsure why their product has been linked to an eye infection that can leave people blinded. This is worrisome because the company does not know what is wrong with their product. The infection that has been linked to the contact lens solution, acanthamoeba keratitis, is difficult to treat and can be blinding.

The company has said that it plans to replace the solution with another solution by the end of the year.
Consumers File Class Action Against Advanced Medical Optics

The first nationwide consumer class action lawsuit has been filed against Advanced Medical Optics. The lawsuit seeks reimbursement for consumers who purchased Complete MoisturePlus Multi-Purpose Solution. Wendy R. Fleishman, a partner at Lieff Cabraser, one of the law firms representing the plaintiffs, says "AMO aggressively marketed Complete MoisturePlus Multi-Purpose Solution as an effective contact lens disinfectant that doctors recommended. This advertising campaign was false. Users of AMO’s Complete MoisturePlus Multi-Purpose Solution, according to government health officials, carry a seven-fold increased risk of developing an extremely painful infection of the cornea that can lead to blindness."

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently have advised that all users of Advanced Medical Optics Complete Moisture Plus Multi-Purpose Solution stop using the solution immediately. The product has been linked to an outbreak of the eye infection known as Acanthamoeba keratitis. The CDC says that Acanthamoeba keratitis is caused when a microscopic organism known as Acanthamoeba gets into the cornea. The cornea is the clear outer covering of the eye. If the condition is not treated, it can lead to scarring of the cornea and even blindness.
